I love animals & rode horses from a young age. I used to spend all of my weekends at the stables, cleaning bridles and saddles, mucking out, then being rewarded with a riding lesson. At 21, I fell in love with Winston, he was a cross Arab Thoroughbred, he was a character, he’s no longer with us & I’m no longer able to ride due to some physical issues. Working with leather & the unique smell evokes those wonderful memories: I love how strong leather is, & yet so soft. It is something I aspire to be: having that strength of character, but making sure I still have my softness & allow my vulnerabilities to be seen. I am autistic & for many years felt I needed to hide my vulnerabilities in a hard shell - it has taken many years, & lots of work on myself, but I am at last allowing me to be my authentic self. I’m hoping through that, I can show my strength of character. Working with leather is good for the soul: the time it takes cutting then burnishing is a mindful process in itself, I am fully absorbed & as the saying goes…busy hands…quiet mind…and when the mind does wander, it takes me to those lovely times: cantering through stubble fields, or working intensely in the school after cleaning the bridle & saddle.
